Registration Categories
The Ice Hockey New South Wales registration categories are as follows (please click on link for more detail about the categories):
Development
The Development Registration category is divided into two sub-categories, they are:
- Junior Development: 17 years of age & under as of 31 December of registration year.
- Senior Development: 18 years of age & over as of 31 December of registration year.
This registration category is for new members that have never played ice hockey before. Proof of age and identification documentation are mandatory requirements for all new members to the sport however, this is a one-off requirement.
Members can only be registered as Development for two consecutive years.
Proof of Age and Citizenship
If you are currently an Ice Hockey New South Wales member and have not submitted a “certified copy” of your passport "photo" page or birth certificate within the past two years please do so. Post a “certified copy” of your passport "photo" page or birth certificate to IHSNW Office.

Associated Documentation

Player
The Player Registration category is divided into two sub-categories, they are:
- Junior Players: 17 years of age & under as of 31 December of registration year.
- Senior Players: 18 years of age & over as of 31 December of registration year.
Player registrations for all grades are accepted on the basis of age as at December 31 of the registration year. The following grades are represented:
- Atom: 11 years of age & under (male and female).
- Pee Wee: 13 years of age & under (male and female).
- Bantam: 15 years of age & under (male and female).
- Midget: 18 years of age & under (male and female).
- Women: Open Age Female (17 years of age & under requires Under Age Playing Up Consent & Approval Form).
- East Coast Super League: 23 years of age & under. 5 players per team permissible over the age of 23 (over 23 age group will have to register offline).
- AIHL: Open Age Male (NSW team players can use the online registration system).
- Senior 1: Open Age Mixed.
- Senior 2: Open Age Mixed.
- Senior 3: Open Age Mixed.
All players must be registered in their respective age grade. No exceptions will be made. This does not prevent a minor hockey age player from playing into higher grades, as long as the relevant Under Age Playing Up Approval & Consent form is submitted to the Office of IHNSW BEFOREHAND.

In-House
The In-House Registration category is divided into two sub-categories, they are:
- Junior In-House: 17 years of age & under as of 31 December of registration year.
- Senior In-House: 18 years of age & over as of 31 December of registration year.
This registration category is for members that are no longer considered Development or who do not make Club teams in the IHNSW league competition. They may play in a Club based tournament. This category also allows for Inter-Club exhibition games.

Coach
The Coach Registration category is divided into two sub-categories, they are:
- Non-Playing Junior Coaches/Trainers: 17 years of age & under as of 31 December of registration year.
- Non-Playing Senior Coaches/Trainers: 18 years of age & over as of 31 December of registration year.
Coaches:
- Must be accredited with Ice Hockey Australia.
- Must have attended a Line Official’s course within the first two years.
- Cannot be the manager of a team.

Non Playing Official
Non-playing managers, penalty box officials and those authorized to enter the team bench area.
Responsibilities of non-playing team managers are:
- To be fully conversant with the Ice Hockey New South Wales Handbook.
- To abide by the Team Coaches and Manager Code of Ethics.
- To keep abreast of the draw and liaise weekly regarding any late changes.
- It is the responsibility of the home team’s manager (no matter at which venue the game is scheduled), to provide a game report sheet, a recorder for completion of the game report sheet), time keeper and sufficient pucks for both teams’ warm-up, plus sufficient new or near new pucks for the actual game.
- To lodge team sheets on time and in correct order.
- To ensure all players have the correct uniforms and equipment.
- To ensure that all players and bench officials are financial, free and clear of all suspensions and playing restrictions.
- To check and sign the Game Report before the game.
- To notify Ice Hockey New South Wales (by email, fax, or phone to message bank), the result of all winning games, immediately after the games are played.
- To advise the relevant club president, secretary or Ice Hockey New South Wales Executive Officer of anything untoward that is occurring within the sport.
- To make sure of relevant statistics for both their players and games, so that ineligible players can be identified. Forms are available from the office for this
- Must be conversant with IHA Anti Doping Policy (please refer to relevant sections and paragraphs for further details). Copies are available from the office.
- All club teams with players under the age of 18 must have a non-playing adult manager.
- Open-age club teams both at home and travelling must have an adult manager however, he/she can also be a player as long as his/her first priority is to leave the ice in the case of an incident that requires assistance. The designated manager must also be listed on the game sheet as such. Only open-age teams can have a manager who is also a player.
- If rulings concerning coaches and managers cannot be adhered to, then a fine of $110 inclusive of GST, will be handed out to the clubs, plus a game forfeiture should the offending team be the winning team.
- Players should not share drink bottles to avoid contracting infectious diseases such as Meningococcal. Managers should advise their team of the necessity of hygienic practices.

Non-playing Referees And Line Officials
The Non-playing Referees and Line Officials Registration category is divided into two sub-categories, they are:
- Non-Playing Junior Referee and Line Official: 17 years of age & under as of 31 December of registration year.
- Non-Playing Senior Referee and Line Official: 18 years of age & over as of 31 December of registration year.
Responsibilities of Referee and line officials are:
- Current referees must do a refresher course every 3 years to be eligible to officially referee games, however it is compulsory for referees to complete a referee’s course every time a new IIHF rule book is presented, usually every four years.
- The IHA Referee In Chief may require a referee to sit a refresher course every year to be eligible for selection to officiate at AIHL games and national tournaments.
- A minimum of two game officials is required for a game to commence.
- It is the responsibility of the game referee to ensure that the original Game Report is signed by each team manager, coach or captain, before the game. The MVP number is to be recorded by the referee on the original Game Report form. The original game sheet and Game Report form must be returned to the IHNSW Executive Officer on the first working day of the following week, so that any reports can be acted upon, and for payment of officials. Only originals will be accepted for this.
- Notify the IHNSW for confirmation of pay rates.
- So that the Executive Officer can notify players of any automatic suspension / Tribunal that maybe applicable to a penalty /offence received, referees must note on the NSW Incident Report the relevant offence as listed on the IHA schedule of offences.
- If a club official draws the referee’s attention to an unauthorised person on the bench or a spectator in an unprotected area of the rink, then the referee has the power to stop the game until the unregistered official or spectator has been moved, with the clock still running until the person has done so. Failure to move should result in citing him/her or the family member playing, for disciplinary purposes.
- If the referee inadvertently allows a player to play whilst failing to meet the uniform and equipment rules (such as face and neck guards), the opposing team captain must advise the referee and the referee will enforce the appropriate IIHF Rules. If the player does not comply then the referee will suspend play until such time that either the player leaves the ice or abides by the ruling. The penalty of $110 inclusive of GST will be issued to the team via their club, for any player who continues to flaunt equipment rulings.
- If a referee determines a Tribunal is necessary, it must be recorded on the official Game Report.
- A referee in conjunction with other game officials are officially required to stop a game however, other bench officials can assist should circumstances necessitate such action.
- In order for Bantam or Midget age players to be eligible to play in ANY playoffs, they must have completed a Line Officials course (once only).
- Abuse of officials will not be tolerated by IHNSW. Members are expected to support the decisions of officials at all times.

Active Volunteer
Active Volunteers include game sheet recorders, time keepers, helpers and club officials who do not enter the team bench (non-public/unscreened areas).
Active Volunteers are not required to pay ($1.00) on the online registration system. Please pay your club secretaries to pass on to Ice Hockey New South Wales.
